Background: Starr Aaron is an executive assistant at Bellwether Education Partners. Prior to joining Bellwether, she worked as a technical trainer, a high school English teacher, and an AmeriCorps volunteer for the American Red Cross. Additionally, Starr has spent many years as a community volunteer, serving as Girl Scout troop leader and an event planner with the Citizen's Fundraising Initiative for Roeland Park. Starr is also a founding member of the Safe School Zone Coalition in Johnson County, Kansas, whose mission is to work with city, district, and county officials to promote safe biking and walking to school. Finally, as a PTA board member, she has organized an annual fundraiser to save arts enrichment programming and connected community partners to build a school garden, with hopes to continue that work for years to come. When she finds the time, her hobbies include book clubbing, visiting National Parks, and finding the perfect trifle recipe.
Starr holds a B.A. in Philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University, and an M.Ed. in Secondary English Education from Columbus State University. She and her husband Ryan have three children, Katie, Winslow, and Drew, all of whom attend the neighborhood public school.
Why I do this work: Having been immersed in grassroots efforts to improve our local school, I'm well aware that this work, while important, just isn't sufficient. There must be work and change at all levels, from my neighborhood all the way up to the national stage.
