Bellwether Education Partners is a national nonprofit focused on dramatically changing education and life outcomes for underserved children. We do this by helping education organizations accelerate their impact and by working to improve policy and practice.


Bellwether envisions a world in which race, ethnicity, and income no longer predict opportunities for students, and the American education system affords all individuals the ability to determine their own path and lead a productive and fulfilling life.

We believe that the only way to ensure all children have access to a high-quality education is to take a holistic approach by changing field-level policies and perceptions while strengthening and supporting individual organizations. Organizational Culture


Bellwether takes our mission of serving educators, students, organizations, and communities seriously. But we try not to take ourselves as individuals quite so seriously. We do challenging work, and we know how to have fun. From jumpsuits and talent shows at retreats, to PowerPoint presentations on werewolves and vampires at team meetings, we embrace our individuality — our quirks, talents, and diversity of viewpoints. We welcome different experiences and perspectives because we know that our team is stronger for having a variety of political, cultural, and educational beliefs represented.

About the Position


Bellwether has an immediate opening for a Communications and Marketing Manager who will help expand the reach of our work, assist in the promotion and dissemination of all public-facing research, track impact using metrics and analytics, and develop and maintain internal systems for communications planning and internal communications. The Communications and Marketing Manager will work across Bellwether and support all of Bellwether's service areas. This position will report to Bellwether Co-founder and Policy and Thought Leadership Senior Partner Andrew Rotherham.


The Communication and Marketing Manager’s primary responsibilities and duties will be to:


  • Develop and support branding efforts to articulate Bellwether's competitive advantage and build awareness of the Bellwether brand, both internally and externally
  • Work with and support project managers to plan and execute direct dissemination and outreach to target audiences — including media, policymakers, funders, current and prospective clients, and other stakeholders — for all public-facing reports and products
  • Draft media advisories, press releases, and talking points about Bellwether’s work
  • Manage and grow Bellwether’s social media presence
  • Track press hits and maintain a press database with Salesforce integration
  • Produce and send email communications to external Bellwether audiences, manage the email newsletter calendar, and look for opportunities to build our list
  • Track website, social media, and newsletter analytics to help us evaluate the impact of our work
  • Take on internal roles to build out Bellwether’s capabilities, including assisting with cross-organizational communications alignment and internal communications

Bellwether undertakes no representative work on behalf of clients, so this is not a public relations role for any entity other than Bellwether itself and there are no client accounts for this role to manage.


Qualifications


Bellwether is a good fit for professionals who possess strong personal drive and motivation; demonstrate exemplary professional behavior and values; and who are resourceful, responsible, tenacious, independent, creative, and self-confident. Our core values give prospective candidates a good sense of how we approach our work.


In addition, the successful candidate will have:


  • At least 3-5 years of professional experience in communications, writing, and/or public relations and media relations
  • A demonstrated track record of successful development and implementation of marketing and communications strategies in the public, private, and/or nonprofit sector
  • Strong skills in written communication, editing, and interpersonal communication
  • Fluency with social media platforms and blogs
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively about opportunities to expand the reach of our work
  • Entrepreneurial work style and willingness to proactively identify needs and take on projects
  • Ability to give and get feedback, manage up and laterally, as needed, and an ability to execute projects successfully without constant supervision
  • A well-rounded interpersonal skill set with the capacity to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • A high attention to detail and a commitment to producing the highest quality work

The following traits/skills are ideal but not required:


  • A strong personal network of media connections in policy, education, trade, and/or mainstream press
  • A master’s degree in public policy, education, journalism, or a related field
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to improving outcomes for underserved students
  • Experience with web-based content management systems (including Drupal and Wordpress) and CRMs (including Salesforce)
  • Email marketing and list-building experience
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS

Compensation


Bellwether Education Partners provides competitive compensation and an attractive benefits package that includes a performance bonus based on individual and firm success, health care coverage, and a 401(k) plan with an employer matching contribution policy.


Location


The ideal candidate will be based in or around Washington, DC, but we will consider strong candidates in other locations.
