Chief of Staff
Operations

Background: Steven Purcell is the chief of staff at Bellwether Education Partners and has spent seven years dedicated to education reform and working to improve our public school system through his strategic, analytical, and operational expertise. Before joining Bellwether, he was the director of college partnerships at the KIPP Foundation, where he led a team focused on supporting KIPP alumni in their pursuit of postsecondary attainment. His efforts brought attention to an emerging core function of the KIPP Foundation.

Previous to this position, Steve was a program and policy development advisor at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where he led the development and implementation of a district-wide performance management system. His work was instrumental in stewarding LAUSD towards meeting its district performance goals and building capacity within central office departments to make the shift from a compliance culture to a performance culture.

Steve is a former Broad Center Resident in Urban Education and spent the two years of his residency in the San Francisco Unified School District. Steve holds a BS in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Southern California and an MBA from Pepperdine University with a concentration in entrepreneurship. Finally, he is pursuing a doctorate in education from Loyola Marymount University.

Why I do this work: As a child of immigrants and a first generation college graduate, I genuinely know the power of education and how it can change lives for the better. I also know how not having access to a quality education and the tools to navigate our K-12 and higher education systems can leave many of our underserved students behind. I'm committed to this work to ensure underserved communities have a fair shot at the American Dream.
