Using Education Data Towards Equity
The way states fund public schools in this country results in deep inequities along racial and economic lines. EdBuild was an organization that defined school funding problems and illustrated solutions, and when they closed their doors this July, they made their tools available for journalists, researchers, and advocates.
Bellwether Education Partners is pleased to host two trainings with Sara Hodges, former Director of Data and Visualizations at EdBuild, on how to use these resources and keep equity at the forefront of education research. The second training is now closed — to hear about potential future sessions, sign up for our newsletter here.
EdBuild’s Data Sources and Resources
Tuesday, December 1st, 1 - 3 p.m. ET
Understanding the inequitable geography of education funding is more important than ever. This training offers a deep-dive into education finance and demographics data at the school district level and an overview of how to use EdBuild’s open source data and tools in the context of looming state budget cuts. This training is intended for researchers, advocates, and journalists of all data skill levels, but some amount of data curiosity is required.

Intro to R for K-12 Education Research
Wednesday, December 2nd, 1 - 4 p.m. ET
SESSION IS FULL
This hands-on training covers how to use R, an open-source software package, for education research. Participants will walk through the basics of importing data, processing it into datasets, answering simple research questions, and exporting the results. Participants will leave knowing how to do a small data project in R from start to finish using EdBuild’s two R packages. This training is intended for researchers, advocates, and journalists who are R-curious, ranging from no experience whatsoever to basic R skills. Participants will need to install R and R-Studio on their computers before attending.
Both events will be captioned.
